On have officially launched their LightSpray factory in Zurich which adds another (robotic) arm to their growing innovation hub in the Swiss capital.
If you’re a bit of tech noir film fan like me you’re probably getting the same Terminator vibes from 1984 in the final factory scene of the legendary sci-fi film. Setting the bar (once again) for footwear innovation the Swiss born performance trainer brand, On, have just unveiled their latest LightSpray factory in Zurich. The new footwear production facility features the very latest, state-of-the-art footwear manufacturing innovation & production technology. Boasting 4 robot arms that can manufacture all the components for an On running trainer in 3 minutes. The fully automated, and industrially scalable, technology marks a new era for footwear production and couldn’t launch at a better time as brands like On were previously hit with Trumps reciprocal tariffs with the majority of their manufacturing sourced from Vietnam. The (upper) reliance on regions like South East Asia for On is now no longer.
Utilising a robot arm & 1.5km of filament, On’s LightSpray technology can produce an ultra lightweight upper in a process that saves space & time whilst also minimising waste & carbon emissions. Developed over the last 4 years in Zurich, the futuristic footwear technology adds another (robotic) arm to On’s growing innovation hub in the Swiss capital which now employs over 1000 people. With research & development at the very core of the performance brand’s ethos, On will be hosting a series of open dates which will run till 6th July 2025 to try on a pair of ‘robot arm’ made trainers alongside workshops and panel talks.
