The size? Exclusive adidas Montreal 76 trainer revives the OG 3 stripes trainer which was originally released for the Montreal Olympics.
As the evolution of sole technology & trainer innovation continues to break ground, you still can’t really beat the classic 3 stripes stuff. Born out of a bitterly brotherly rivalry between the Dassler brothers, the one-upmanship approach to footwear design gave us some of the very best athletic silhouettes of all time. Classic gum soled styles that were designed for sports such as handball & track athletes that were only available because one-man band stores from cities like Liverpool drove to Germany and back in a Ford Transit stocked full of trefoil trainers. Sourcing rare adidas from the Continent was what gave the German sportswear brand the “Casual” connection, something which will probably never go away regardless of current trainer trends. Doing what they do best, size? are now back with another exclusive in the form of the Montreal 76 trainer straight out the Herzogenaurach archives.
Based on the adidas Munchen Super from 1972, the Montreal 76 was originally released as a leisure shoe for German athletes competing at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The stand out feature was of course the flexible rubber heel which could be folded down allowing the wearer to wear it more like a slip-on-shoe without having to untie the laces. An OG hybrid trainer/mule, the Montreal 76 was well ahead of its time and has seen various iterations since its original release back in the 1970s.
Now revived (once again) from the Herzogenaurach archives as part of a very special size? exclusive release, the Montreal 76 features classic suede uppers with contrasting 3 stripes to the sidewalls & perforations to the toe vamp. A textured gum sole unit & the signature rubber heel adds some unique retro kerb appeal alongside trefoil branding to the heel tab. Finished off with ‘Montreal 76’ in gold foiling to the lateral sides, the adidas Montreal 76 is available now exclusively from size.co.uk.
